Join the Canadian combatives legend William “Bill” Underwood as he showcases self-defence for women. Over the course of clear photography, sketches and instructions he lays out a curriculum for self-defence for the attacks women would be most likely to face. Corporal William J. Underwood was a Canadian soldier, veteran of WW1, a WW2 reservist and a world-renown Ju Jitsu instructor. In this 1944 guide for women, he showcases his art of ‘Combato’ as a means to help keep ladies safe from the typical attacks and harassment of the era. As a Judoka, boxer, Ju Jitsu and military combatives expert, his curricula draws on a wide range of sources – and all techniques are supported by clear photography, sketches and follow-along descriptions. Peppered throughout are anecdotes and stories of these techniques used by Underwood’s students too. Known as ‘Bill’ he famously used his Judo to escape a WW1 prison camp and was known to have taught civilians and soldiers in WW2 in preparedness for combat. 2024 N & M Press reprint (original pub 1944). 71 pages illustrated with slow motion stills
